  • Messages from 2001 to 2006

I grew up in Brigus and still think it is such a quaint town thats for sure ...The people here are very receptive to our visitors through out the years ..Without our love for the town it probably would be just another little place .If anyone have never visited Brigus before i would highly recommend it to everyone and im sure when you visit it the first time youll alway come back ,that is the kind of magatism thta our little historic town has .. Bravo to our town clerk because the website is just fantastic but in order to appreciate Brigus you will have to visit and tell your friends ...If anyone comes on here that i have graduated with at Bishop Oneill in 84 then write down my e mail address because i be glad to hear from you ..

Just found this site. My grandfather was from Brigus but other than his parents died young we know nothing.   Does the names Joshua and Johanna Roberts mean anything to anyone. They were married in 1876, Joshua died in 1886.   My grandfather George was born 2-9-78 and his sister Louise 11-4-78.   After his parents died he moved to MA.   Moved to Adams Cove in 1900 and his family from Brigus would visit.   We would love to connect with our Brigus relatives.   Thank you.

Looks like a beautiful place. My husband and I are visiting Brigus for the first time this summer.   My father was born in Brigus and his family moved to Buffalo many years ago. His name was William Gushue, and my grandparents were Stewart and Elizabeth Gushue. Would love any suggestions on finding out more about my family heritage

I have visited Brigus and Cupids twice in the last eight years and found that they are very friendly. The museum I found was particularly interesting as I am the village blacksmith in a little town just north of me. I have been smithing for over thirty years and the iron work that I found was very interesting although scarce. The trouble that I have when I visit there is that I don't have enough time so see everything. If I could get my wife to move there I would be on a plane in a minute, but she comes from St. John's and now that we have a grand daughter the idea of moving is very unlikely so I will just have to get used to visiting. Hopefully again this year 2006.The piece and quiet are a far cry from the hussle and bussle where we live and there is so much history thier. I guess that is why I like it so much...Les..

Good morning Wayne; it has been a dogs age since I last wrote a line. I just wanted to say that I hope to bring my parents Noah and Violet (Gushue) Sparkes to Brigus next year. They are now both 80 years young and would like to visit the old home town one again before lifes courtain closes for them. There is the possibility that we may try to have a Gushue reunion around the same time. Any Gushue's from the Leonard and Edith Gushue line may contact me for any further info. This is only in the talk stages just yet.   HAVE A GREAT BIG BRIGUS DAY!   Harold S.

Thanks for putting this lovely web site together.
My father's family is originally from Carbonear. My grand father's brother was the Very Rt. Rev. Joseph Msgr.Murphy DD. He was the pastor of the Catholic Church in Brigus, back in the 1930s and 1040s. He is buried next to the church. My father and I were both named after him.
It was so heart warming to see pictures of his church among your photos.
Take care and God Bless!

Hi there, I love your website. My mother just passed away in August from cancer. She was the daughter of Harry and Irene {Roberts} from Brigus. My Mom's name is Elizabeth[Hiscock]Lepper. When I was eight years old I got to see Newfoundland and Nova Scotia. My Dad's family is from Tatamagouche, N.S..The thing I remember most is seeing the family home, cemetary, and a big fish place with the name Hiscock. My Mom told me that place burned down later. Now I live on the coast of Maine near fishing wharfs. My Mom was 77.

I was in Brigus on Sept. 10th and stayed at the 'Brittoner'. I just loved that little town. I had never been to Newfoundland before and will return and take more time to visit both Brigus and the region. Great site! Great scenery. I'm a small town person at heart.

I've never been to Newfoundland, but it's my dream to visit someday. Years ago I used to go to the library just to read about the province and look at the photos. Now, with the internet I have all the information and photos right at my fingertips and "visit" to my heart's content. Brigus looks to me like the most beautiful town on earth. How lucky those of you who live there are! Every town has its charm but Brigus looks to me like a piece of heaven.

To all those who worked on building this site - Congratulation!   I come by every once in a while to see what's new.   I'm in Brigus 2/3 times a year visiting our mother.   I can't tell you how proud I am of my hometown.   I tell everyone I can about it and love to show off my family home to anyone who will look.   It's featured on the "virtual tour", Morning Mist.
Our father, Graham Percy, Riverhead, would be very proud to have the home he and our mother looked after with such pride featured on the official website.
Thanks for the memories, Jackie (Percy) Salvaterra, formerly of Riverhead.

I have visited your site which is very, very nice. We enjoyed visiting Brigus of August 2003. I mentioned this town as my favourite place to see. We enjoyed the sites, playes etc.
What I have been searching for is a picture of a very small cemetary near Hawthorne Place and beside a small house. There are very few people buried in this cemetary but very unusual in that there were two very large looking crypts or vaults above the ground. We forgot to take a picture of this site and have been searching for info ever since. The
stones or vaults were very old and wanted to see pictures of them to show friends and family the uniqueness of the two vaults at least 4to5feet high. Also the information that was written on them.
If anyone could assist me, with a photo - it would be gladly appriciated with a close-up also of the text on the stones.
Thank you

Hi!   I was lucky enough to visit Brigus this past month, and WOW ! what a piece of heaven here on earth!   It was so gentle and peaceful.   I would travel back there again ... in a heartbeat!
I am looking for any tucked away photos of my grandfather, GORDON RICHARD HODDINOTT whom was the school principal in 1948.   His house, across from the town wharf, burned to the ground one night, and he perished in the fire, along with any family photos.   If anyone has a photo of him at the school or around town, please share!   I can be contacted through my website www.whitelakeart.com or through my Uncle, John Waller, currently the mayor of Brigus.   any treasures from the past would be cherished.   Thank you, Lori

I think your site is just lovely. Very informative. I have never been to Brigus, but am coming there this weekend for a wedding at Wilcox Garden. I was surfing the web looking for a B&B, found one. I   know of one person living in Brigus and that is a school teacher I had many years ago. His name is Ronald Burke. He taught me grade 7 & 8 at the old Roman Catholic School on Chapel Hill in Bonavista. If you read this Ron, remember the old black car, many a time you gave us all rides home in it from the rain and snow. Hopefully I'll bump into you somewhere and see if you remember me.   My maiden name was Squires. I look forward to my visit to Brigus and a walking tour of the town.   Keep up the good work on your site.

Just looking at your website because my mom - Sybil Steele (MacLean) (b. 1926) was born and raised there, but the family (Steele's China)moved away when she went to Toronto for nursing back in the 40's. She's only talked a little about it and been back once to visit relatives - too busy raising us eight kids I guess, but it sounded idealic. I was trying to fing the house she grew up in in all your terrific pictures. I would like to get to Newfoundland and hopefully Brigus this summer with my family as we tour the East. The first order is PEI to pay my respects to my dad whom I buried in 1982, then I think   need to make the trek to Brigus and connect a little with my roots. Possibly this will give light to understanding my mom a little better! :) Great site and hope to see you in the summer. -James Steele Maclean-

Hi Wayne
Long time since I said Hello. I just have to take a look a Brigus every now and then, to make me homesick. I just looked at guestbook and I see another inquiry re Capt Bob B. I was wondering if you could set up a special link or page for these inquiries. As my grandfather Leonard Gushue and my uncle Bart Gushue both sailed with Capt Bob. I know that my father Noah Sparkes would have known James Youden. P.S. my grandmother was a Rose I guess you and I are 3rd or 4th cousins.

It's been awhile since I wrote a note. I still love coming to get a little tasste of home once in awhile. Just noticed a note re James Youden from Georgetown. Thats where my father Noah Sparkes was born he is a relative of yours, my grandmother was a Rose. Small world! I was wondering how many folk are still around who had relatives sail with Capt Bob B. It would be interesting to find out. My grandgather Leonard Gushue and his son my uncle Bart Gushue did. Enough I don't want to tatake up to much space.

My Great-grandfather travelled with Captain Bob Bartlet and there is a picture of him in the Hawthorne Cottage.   If there is anyone who has any information conserning James Youden please contact me.

I love the Blue Berry Festival

Just a little note to say that the website is great!   I got to show people what "home" really looks like.   They get so sick and tired of me saying "home", I decided to show them all!   They all loved it, now they can see what's so special about it.   Will miss the festival this year, but I will be sending my daughter Jessika with her grandmother so she won't. Would love to hear from anyone via e-mail.   See everyone next year!

Hello to all is Brigus.   I can see why Clarence Rose always talked about wanting to go home.   I can also see why Michelle and the girls wanted to go to.   We miss you all very much but don't worry we'll see each other soon down there.   Aunt Chelle and Uncle Clay, Matt can't wait to see all of you this summer.
My love to all, take care, and see all in Brigus soon.

Thanks for taking the time to create a site that will attract tourists and remind those that have had to move away, why they need to visit HOME more often.

To All The Kind People of Brigus:
We suddenly lost our wonderful mother, Evelyn Noseworthy (Spracklin). She was born and raised in Brigus and always fondly referred to Brigus as home.
On behalf of my brothers, sister and Father (William Noseworthy), I would like to thank the may people of Brigus for their many cards, calls and prayers during our time of sorrow. You'll never know how much your expressions of sympathy touched and warmed our hearts. It is very comforting to know that you share our sorrow and loss. Your thoughtfullness has meant so much and everything you have done is truly appreciated and will never be forgotten. Thank You!!

Wonderful sight.Enjoyed the photographs, wished there were more (old ones too. Searching for my roots. My great grandfather, Esau Isaac Roberts, born 1846 in Brigus. Lived from approx. 1870 till his death in Forteau, Labrador 1924. Married to Caroline Ann Buckle of Forteau. Would like to trace his roots, and those of my forefathers, to visit the past. Wished this site had concrete LINKS to help me. Thanks and I will visit.

Wayne I just did a full view of the Websit and have to say that it is one of the best I have seen for information on a town. As owner of The Country Corner Gift Shop and Eatery in Brigus for the past 12 years I have met tourists from all over the world as well as from our own province. I can honestly say that in all that time I have not heard a negative comment about our town. My guest book can attest to that fact. Many have been return visitors because they didn't have enough time to do and see all that they had hoped the first time. They fail to understand the size of our province and how long it takes to travel from end to the other. With so many beautiful towns in our province to visit we can only hope that ours will remain the number one destination for visitors on the Avalon Peninsula. Keep up the good work on the site. Joan

My Nan and I would sit up on the hill and have a picnic lunch and watch all the boats coming in and out of Riverhead. We spoke a lot about how life was back then, although, a very hard labouroius lifestyle she treasured it. I just discovered your website and enjoyed it very much. My father, Donald Bartlett Wilcox, was born in Brigus in 1904. He was the son of Captain William A. Wilcox and Emma Bartlett (cousin of Captain Robert Bartlett). My wife and I visited Brigus several years ago and loved it. We stayed at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Frank King. Their home is the former home of my Uncle Harold and Aunt Hilda Wilcox. My uncle and aunt donated the property that now is the Wilcox Gardens. I currently own a lot on Station Road that I inherited from my uncle and aunt's estate when they passed away (it is for sale if anyone is interested). Again, Brigus is a beautiful town and we enjoyed every minute of our stay there and hope to return some day.

I ran across your site while looking for information on Newfoundland. My grandfather was from Newfoundland and I have always felt a desire to go there. I have relatives there, but I don't know who they are or where they live. Now that I have seen some pictures of lovely Brigus, I know for a fact that I would love it. Just beautiful, I hope some day I can visit, all the way from California.

I was so happy to come across your beautiful Brigus, and want to wish you all success in the saving of your St. George's Church. Can I help you? I am a cousin of Kathryn Taylor, who lived in Brigus for many years. We were very close, although we did not live near each other. We had planned a vacation to Cape Breton a couple years ago. I am happy to correspond with Kathryn's son, David and his lovely wife, Louanne. They and their wonderful sons, Harry, Stewart and Alistair were very dear to our parents' hearts. Kathryn's Dad was my Dad, Stewart's brother. I would love to come to Brigus, and want to make that a goal of mine for the near future. I wish you all love, joy and happiness. I recently discovered a diary of my great grandfather's, Theophilus Netten, who was the Anglican minister at St. George's from 1887-1890. Many of the surnames I see on the Brigus web site are mentioned in the diary-Hiscock, Bartlett, Jerrett, Spracklin and many others. I am visiting Newfoundland this summer and am really looking forward to seeing Brigus!

Although we were on a schedule and didn't get to see everything, we certainly plan on visiting Brigus during our next trip to Newfoundland. I was feeling a bit nostalgic today, as it is the anniversary of my mother's birth in Brigus (Florence Patricia King, 1920). It was nice to be able to take a virtual trip "home", and relive some of my childhood memories of trips to Brigus. Great site, well put together. The last of the family to live in town was Harold King, who lived in the family house on Beaver Pond. Are there any Kings, Gushues, or Clarkes in Brigus who might be long-lost cousins?

Hi - My husband and I honeymooned in Brigus in 1975 - his grandfather Ernest Payne joined us. We stayed in Harry Payne's house and visited Harry's sister Emma - she took us to the second floor of a church manse where we saw gifts that sea captains had given to the Town of Brigus - some items were 200 and more years old. Are these items part of a musuem display? Harry Payne had a reputation for knowing the best spots to fish in the harbour and younger men following the spots where he put down his lines. Is there any cod jigging going on in the harbour now?

Wayne, what wonderful photos of Brigus! I am particularly interested in the older ones since I recently found out that my maternal family roots link back to the Critchs who lived in Brigus in the mid 1800s. Apparently 2 Critch brothers had a house which was known, ca 1850s at least, as the "twin houses of Brigus". Do you have any idea if they are included in any of your photos?

I heard about Brigus after I read The Icemaster which tells the remarkable story of your Captain Bob Bartlett and his heroic role in saving the crew of the Karluk in 1913/1914. When I learned that there is a musuem about him in BRIGUS, I added a (personal) day to my planned business trip to St. John's in September specifically to come to your town.I am really looking forward to my visit as I now see that there's a great deal of history to learn about in your town! See you soon!

I was very sorry that I was unable to visit Brigus on my trip to Nfld. last year. I had the good fortune to spend some time in Brigus a few years ago and met some wonderful people who I now consider good friends. I hope to be back some day soon. Have a great blueberry festival this week. You people have a great town and are very lucky to live where you do.....even if some of you don't realize it.
